The license for the newest version of Epic’s Unreal Engine, version 3, was officially purchased today by SEGA so that it may be utilized in the creation of a multiplatform game, which SEGA has not released any further information about. Dave Cobb, the Vice President of Development at SEGA of America, expressed the value of the Unreal Engine thusly: “the great capabilities of Unreal Engine 3 make it possible for our developers to deliver incredible gaming experiences,” before going on to say that the “Unreal Engine 3 provides superior power and flexibility enabling SEGA to bring original and exciting next-generation multi-platform titles." This isn’t the first time that SEGA has utilized the Unreal Engine, as it was used in the creation of titles such as Condemned 2 and Universe at War: Earth Assault.
The Vice President of Epic Games, Mark Rein, backed up the sentiment of Mr. Cobb when he made the statement that, “SEGA has cultivated some of the world’s most treasured game franchises, and we are thrilled that they have decided to make more games with Unreal Engine,” and that Epic Games was behind SEGA in “supporting SEGA with exceptional tools and technologies so it may continue to build upon its successes."
