LucasArts has finally given an official response to the increasing whirlwind of stories concerning the rumored 75-100 employees laid off, including producer of the LEGO Indiana Jones and Star Wars games, Peter Hirschmann. Margaret Ghrone, director of PR for LucasArts, gave confirmation of the layoffs, but would not discuss exact numbers. She did, however, confirm the departure of Hirschmann, whose terminated employment was said to be a “mutual decision.”
While Ghrone explained that the layoffs had to do with “product life cycles,” she did make assurances that the cutbacks have had no serious effects on the company’s internal development studios. She added that LucasArts remains committed to its teams, and is not “halting internal development.” According to LucasArts, production of its internal titles, most importantly The Force Unleashed, will continue unhindered, and are still on track for a fall release.
In regards to the rumors of many most likely disgruntled ex-LucasArts employees dishing out info on upcoming projects (including the next KOTOR game), Ghrone stated that she could not comment on any products that still have yet to be announced. We’ll have more on this story as it continues to develop.
