Take-Two Chairman of the Board Strauss Zelnick has developed a bit of a swagger recently. After holding onto his company through repeated EA takeover bids, he has begun flaunting how great his company is and talking about how other publishers are just as interested in a merger as EA. While no other groups have come forward with a formal offer, word is that T2 has been in discussions with Ubisoft and Activision, and Zelnick has made it clear that the company is willing to entertain offers, provided they are worthy.
Well industry analyst Evan Wilson isn’t buying Zelnick’s bluster, and claims that if it weren’t for Rockstar, Take-Two would practically be begging someone to buy them out so they wouldn’t outright fail. Wilson believes that Rockstar, while definitely a big gun, is really the only thing Take-Two has to offer any potential suitor, and that without the developers behind GTA, the company would be nothing. Says Wilson:
"Rockstar has supported this organization for far too long and it is right to spend every dollar that it can get from Take-Two for keeping the business alive. Unfortunately, management appears to be doing the same thing without it being nearly as deserved.
At the same time as its cost structure is deteriorating, management is telling investors that it is the most efficient organization in the business. That simply is not true."
It’s hard to tell if Wilson has made all these claims because he’s genuinely frustrated with Take-Two management, or if he simply wants someone to acquire the company so we can stop talking about them already. Unfortunately for him, with Rockstar, the 2K sports line, and BioShock all putting money in the vault, Wilson is going to have to yell and scream a lot louder if he wants to be heard over the sounds of the money counting machines sitting at headquarters.
