The struggle between Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has been going on for some time and it has often been uncertain which one will finally achieve dominance: often times it seemed to be the Wii that would eventually win the console war. There is another battle being waged behind the more publicized struggle of which console will dominate the objective of which is to determine which online service will dominate. Sony’s Playstation Network currently has 3 million subscribers to it, not a minuscule sum by any means, and plans are on the way to increase that number by the implementation of it’s new Home service. This would seem to give Sony a firm platform to narrow the gap between itself and Xbox Live’s 8 million subscribes but Microsoft itself seems quite sanguine regarding Xbox Live’s continued success.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, the head of Microsoft’s games and music Division Robbie Bach expressed his views regarding the struggle between Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. Mr. Bach responded with unshakable confidence in Microsoft’s Xbox Live service.. “It’s fair to say that Xbox Live is clearly head and shoulders above anything anyone else has tried to do. We don’t have competition.” Mr. Bach also told the LA Times that Xbox Live also had the advantage of “a very strong, very powerful computer network that provides the backbone for our service” along with “8 million passionate members who create and define what Xbox Live is”.
