Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Demo Out Now
Posted by Brad Hilderbrand, 106 days ago Aug 21, 2008 13:29

For those of you feeling a great disturbance in the Force, know that it is due to the fact that the demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has now appeared on Xbox Live and you are likely to hear the screams of millions of Rebel fighters and Stormtroopers as they are electrically charged and tossed about like rag dolls  all in the name of Vader.

The demo features a run through of the TIE Fighter construction facility you’ve likely seen in numerous demos and videos, and ends with Starkiller taking on an AT-ST... alone. I had some time to tinker with the demo this morning, and while I did enjoy the ability to utilize Force powers and cause nearly total destruction, there are a few things that have made me a bit less excited for the game. First up is the fact that since you can use the Force Grab on pretty much anything, it can be hard to get your targeting just right. While you may be trying to grab a Tie Fighter to fling at your foes, you can easily end up locked onto a box instead since the game just snags whatever is closest to you once you pull the trigger. I’m sure with time it’ll be easier to use, but for the purposes of the demo it seemed a bit too loose.

I’m also a bit leery about a Star Wars game in which the lightsaber is pretty much an afterthought, but I can understand the decision considering the game is all about how destructive the Force can be. Finally, that "special ending" they’ve been talking about? Yeah, maybe it’s on a different difficulty level, because if it’s what I think it is, prepare to be underwhelmed.

You shouldn’t let my experience decide for you though, you really ought to try it out for yourself. Be forewarned however, that the demo weighs in at nearly 1GB, so make sure you have plenty of space on your hard drive and prepare for a fairly lengthy download time. Still, it’s definitely worth it to give this game a look and see what all the fuss is about.
